Starting the gym can be a scary thing so here are my top 5 tips for heading to the gym for the first time:

Go in with a plan
The worse thing you can do when you are already unsure and anxious is to wonder around the gym aimlessly not knowing what to do. Go in with a plan that has been curated for your goals, your ability and your gym's equipment.
Go with a friend or PT
Going into a new environment with someone else helps to relax your nerves. Whether you choose to go with a friend or partner that knows what they are doing or you choose to get a PT to help guide you and teach you the basics, just being there with someone that knows what they are doing is much more calming than going in alone.
Don't be afraid to ask for help
No one expects you to be an expert so ask for help when needed! If you are heading into a commercial gym there will always be staff memebers to help you and answer any questions you have. Or, if you have chosen to get a personal trainer then ask as many questions as you like. We are here to help you and no question is a stupid question.
Take your time
I always compare starting the gym to starting a new job. Your first day is always scary as you are unfamiliar with the building, the staff, the job; but after a few days you start to settle in and things become more familiar and the nerves ease. It's the exact same when starting the gym. Just give yourself time to overcome any anxiety and it will feel easier.
Don't go to fast too quick
You would have chosen to start the gym becasue your motivation levels are high which can often lead to you wanting to do a health overhaul of your whole life. Which is great but it takes times to build up routines. Don't go from zero to 5 workouts in a week, and 2000 calories to 1500 calories, and walking 2k steps per day to 10k steps per day as you will simply burn out. Ease yourself into everything slowly and sustainably and everything will be easier to stick to! Getting a PT or a Health Coach will make these changes easier and keep you pushing the right amount.
Just remember everyone was a beginner at the gym at one point, even proffessionals. As a female I fully understand the anxiety and intimidation you may feel when starting the gym for the first time; which is why my focus as a coach is to guide people and teach them the basics to allow them to settle in and grow in confidence week by week before pushing hard towards your goals.
